The Cheap Eats Group Sydney is a not-for-profit dining and dancing group originally founded in the early 1980s. There are no joining/booking/membership fees. Dinners are held every week, at good restaurants within 10km of the Sydney CBD at a nominal cost of $40.00 or less, for three courses, coffee, BYOW corkage included. 40 plus age range. 50 plus age range. Our Group Members come from the baby-boomer generation, and includes those persons born from 1946 and up until 1975.
The best information to date suggests the group began its life about
1982 in Willoughby, at The Bridgeview Hotel bistro where, on Wednesday Nights, a few people
from the nearby 9 TV Network met for a sherbet or two and some nosh.
On occasions, when friends and family joined the party, there were
migrations to the local restaurants for more formal dining.
It was from this seed that a band of about 10 to 20, now calling
themselves The Cheap Eats Group and led by Mr. Tony Narracott, dined
regularly each Wednesday at various BYOW restaurants around Sydney's inner
suburbs, initially for a maximum cost of just $8.00 per person.
From the mid-eighties up until the early nineties, our Mr. John Murdoch, a quiet
accountant, nursed this collective of mostly singles through its ups and
downs. Individual members organized the restaurants, predominantly
Asian and almost always BYOW,
in Milsons Point, North Sydney, Crows Nest, Neutral Bay, Cremorne, Mosman.
Some of the larger and more expensive, North Shore restaurants, have been very willing to host our
Wednesday Party Night Dinners at very special rates of just $25.00 (before g.s.t. existed) for three course dining.
We had a huge party-night dinner every three months,
that included dancing to great live music, and we had free champagne on arrival.
By the turn of the new century, our Mr. Bob Boyldew, (who passed away on 27 Feb 2008) had organised
music and dancing at every dinner event, and in the year 2000,
we had free champagne every third week. Membership of the Cheap Eats Group SYDNEY,
numbers in the many thousands, and continues to increase with new single women
and new single men joining each week, with over twenty people at most dinners (plus equal numbers),
and we have all seen many great relationships blossom and bloom over the years.
Currently in 2008, all of the restaurants we now attend, usually provide us with three
courses and coffee at a low all-inclusive cash price of $40.00 or less (including g.s.t.).
There are selected Italian, Mediteranean, Greek, Thai, Indian, Asian and Modern Australian
Restaurants in our detailed calendar of dining events, shown in the dine out programme.
They can seat at least 80 to 150 people, (this year, one new NORTH SHORE restaurant seats 200 people),
are fully licensed with cash bar [drinks are pay as you go], and permit us to

There always are various group members attending the whole night, who are appointed as the organizers/hosts for that selected dinner event night, and they will introduce themselves to you on the night. All restaurants provide NEW menus for each event.
